Selkirk 8th Graders to Showcase Year-Long Passion Projects on June 1

After months of curiosity, creativity, and hard work, Selkirk Middle School’s 8th grade science students are ready to share what they’ve been exploring all year. On June 1, the school will host its annual Passion Project Showcase, an event that invites families, staff, and the community to experience student learning in a whole new way.

The Passion Project is a year-long learning experience where students choose a topic they genuinely care about and dive deep into it over time. From designing and building original creations to researching real-world issues or creating solutions to problems, each project reflects a student’s interests, persistence, and growth.

The showcase gives students the opportunity to present their work publicly—explaining their thinking, sharing their process, and highlighting how their ideas evolved throughout the year. Rather than a traditional test or final exam, this event emphasizes communication, creativity, and real-world application of skills.

“This is one of the most exciting parts of the year,” said 8th grade science teacher Rachael Kettner. “Students take ownership of their learning and get to share something they truly care about. You can see how much they’ve grown—not just in what they know, but in how they think and present their ideas.”

Visitors can expect a wide variety of projects and topics, each unique to the student behind it. The showcase is designed to be interactive, allowing guests to ask questions, engage with displays, and celebrate the work students have put in over the course of the year.

The Passion Project Showcase will take place on June 1 at Selkirk Middle School. Community members are encouraged to attend and support students as they share their learning journeys.

It’s a night that captures what learning can look like when students are given the chance to explore their interests—and one you just have to be there to experience.
